Sclerotherapy in Los Gatos is a procedure used to get rid of varicose and spider veins. The procedure consists of injecting a saline solution into the vein, this has an irritating effect on the inside lining of the vein. The vein swells in size and the sides stick to each other, eventually the blood vessel changes to scar tissue and then fades from sight. Sclerotherapy in Los Gatos is a perfectly safe procedure and has been in used for many years.

Who is a candidate for the procedure?

The first meeting you have with the doctor will be a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

  • You cannot have the procedure done if you’re pregnant
  • You can have the procedure done if you use birth control pills
  • If you have had a blood clot, the doctor will make the decision

Veins that may be good candidates for a heart by-pass usually will not be considered for Sclerotherapy in Los Gatos.

How is the Procedure Done?

A very small needle is used, the needle is inserted into the affected vein and the saline solution is injected. When the solution is being injected there may be mild pain or cramps for a couple of minutes. This is especially true when large veins are being treated. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.

The number of varicose or spider veins that are subjected to injection in any one session depends on their size and location. The overall medical health of the patient is also a factor.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and is done in the doctor’s office. The procedure is done by a surgeon or dermatologist. After the procedure, aggressive aerobics should be avoided for a couple of days.

Pre-Treatment:

You will advised by the doctor to avoid certain medications prior to the procedure. The drugs you are using will be discussed in the first session and the doctor will tell you which, if any, to stop taking. Do not use any lotion on the legs prior to the procedure.

Side Effects of Sclerotherapy in Los Gatos:

The side effects of the procedure are limited. There may be a sensation of itchiness; this will go away in a couple of days. The patient may also notice red areas at the site of the injections; these raised areas will also disappear in a couple of days.

Larger veins that have been treated may tend to become lumpy and hard, if this happens it may take several months for the vein to dissolve and fade. There may also be brown spots or lines that appear in the affected vein, they also disappear over time.
