Before the candlelit dinner, the horse-drawn carriage ride through central park and well before the wedding bells and the obligatory dive into a limo or Rolls Royce, the star of the film has to buy the engagement ring. Odds are, the ring is not like any of the designer diamond engagement rings you’ve seen lately. Trends in rings change from time to time, but more importantly not every woman has the same tastes. What may seem perfect for some is absolutely gaudy to others. Only you can tell a jeweler what your bride to be will like unless of course your bride is there to help you pick it out. Traditionally, in most movies at least, the unsuspecting girlfriend is completely taken by the surprise, overwhelmed with emotion and cries, a lot, at the sight of the ring. Movies and scenes like this have put an inordinate amount of pressure on those doing the proposing. As if asking someone to spend the rest of his or her lives with you weren’t pressure enough…
Wedding Rings, Not Bells
Before the bells, come the rings. When searching through the oceans of designer diamond engagement rings online, you will come across every shape, cut and size diamond you can ever imagine, so how do you decide? For starters, you can ask the bride to be if you don’t already know what she likes. If that’s not going to work, you can ask her friends and family. Ultimately, you will rely on the skills and expertise of the jeweler. So instead of going into a jewelry store to look at rings, your priority should really be to look at the sales people and jewelers. With something as uncertain as a designer diamond ring, it’s hard to tell what’s what. Aside from going to a very high-end jeweler and paying an extra 20 – 35% for that assurance, it’s hard to know what is truly worth the extra money.
A Designer Diamond Checklist
The first thing to look for is a jeweler with experience. Where did he or she apprentice? How long has the store been in business? How are the diamonds certified? EGL, GIA or GCAL? Are the diamonds even certified? These are good base questions to have in mind when looking to justify prices of the ring you will buy. When shopping for the right ring, you’ll come across a lot of rings that may seem similar. A good jeweler will be able to explain the differences and why they cost more and what is right for your bride to be. A less than great jeweler will tell you about “great deals.”
