Top Training Schools for Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant

Caregiver’s Basic Duties
The basic duties of a caregiver involve paying close attention to and monitoring the conditions of their patients. Certified nursing assistant is a career field which is one step closer to becoming a certified nurse and a CNA’s responsibilities are almost the same when it comes to taking blood pressure levels, pulse rates, body temperatures, body weight, height, dietary habits, and more. Not all certified nursing assistants will have the same responsibilities because their working environments will be different, from working within a patient’s home to working in a nursing home or a hospital setting.

Additional caregiver training can include the following:
• If a CNA works in someone’s home then they will be responsible for helping their patient perform a variety of different everyday tasks which include, but are not limited to, bathing, eating, grooming and exercising.
• CNA’s are to be familiar with medical terminology and how to give CPR.
• CNA’s must be familiar with infection control.
• CNA’s can record vital signs such as blood pressure and temperatures, and can also record measurements like weight.
• CNA’s must help to keep a clean environment for their patients.
• CNA’s must follow the directions been given by their supervising nurses or doctors.
• CNA’s are also required to be able to know how to rate a patient’s level of pain.
• CNA’s are also required to know how to clean and sterilize equipment.

Caring and Lifting
Additional instructions and classroom training through the caregiver training certification includes students learning the proper procedures in using safe adaptive equipment for assisting clients with disabilities through gait belts, lifts, and other types of transfer devices. Communication skills are an effective tool in working with patients, especially when working with Alzheimer patients and those suffering from dementia.

HIPPA Requirements
Students are further trained in emergency procedures including basic first aid and client preparedness plans. Classroom training instructs CNA students in how to discern abuse and neglect, especially in patient’s homes and how to protect the client and themselves from physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse. CNA caregivers are instructed on the importance of maintaining confidentiality requirements for a patient’s personal, financial, and health information required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
