Just because your roof hasn’t actually fallen on you, doesn’t necessarily mean your roof isn’t on its last legs of life. If your house has had the same roof for a long time, you should start keeping an eye out for telltale signs that your roof needs to be replaced. It can be a hard pill to swallow- the cost of the procedure, the length of time it will take to get it all done- so you may unfortunately ignore some of the warning signs. However, if you suspect you need a new roof in St. Augustine, here are the signs you need to look for.
Research your home, specifically your roof. If it’s at least 20 years old, then at best, your shingles should be replaced. At worst, it means your roof is old enough to be worn down by the elements, as shingles and layers of wood and protective fiber can only do so much.
#2. Check on your neighbors
If your neighbors are getting a new roof, it’s probably time for you to do the same. In a neighborhood, houses are built within a small time frame of each other. So, the repairs your neighbors are doing to their houses can be a good indicator of whether or not you need to perform similar maintenance on your house.
#3. Dark streaks
These are caused by airborne algae settling on your roof deck. On top of not being pleasing to look at, letting these dark streaks be and allowing them to build up is a very bad idea, as they can cause some serious damage over time. Luckily, they’re easy to remove, simply utilizing a mixture of water and bleach to wash them off the roof. Just be sure to keep your houseplants down below from catching the runoff.
#4. It just looks old
At some point it’s going to be clear as day that you need to replace your roof. The shingles will be warped, fungi will be growing on it, and it will look old and worn. If you’re at this stage, you’ve probably been told by your neighbors to have it replaced—and they’re right! A roof that looks this old needs to go for your own safety.
Getting a new roof is something all homeowners need to prepare for. Make sure to have some money saved up for just such an occasion. Because when it’s time to change out your roof, you’d best do it ASAP.
