How to Plan Healthy and Safe African Safaris for Families

Traveling to Africa for a family vacation and safari can be incredibly exciting.  It is a wonderful chance at an adventure that you can share with your loved ones.  But because they are your loved ones, make sure that you keep them healthy and safe by making smart decisions prior to your departure and during your trip.

Preparing for Your Trip

Before you leave, make sure that each member of your family has a visit with the family doctor and that your children see their pediatrician.  It’s very important to ensure that your family members have all the required shots, medications, and inoculations necessary to keep them healthy and safe during your travels.  African safaris for families, while exciting, can come with their own sets of risks.  It’s important to learn what kind of diseases and viruses you might be at risk for, depending on your specific destination.  You must receive the proper vaccinations and medications for diseases that are preventable.  Make sure that you and your family members review your immunization history, and a visit with a doctor will confirm that you have no other health risks.  You should see your doctor at least four weeks before departure in order to begin taking medications to prevent diseases such as malaria.

Safety When in Africa

African safaris for families can also be dangerous if you do not know what to look out for when you are on your trip.  Petty theft is common, and as a tourist, you and your family should keep a close eye on your cameras, wallets, and passports.  You can prepare for these safety measures in advance by purchasing certain items before your departure, such as money belts to be worn under your clothing.  You should also always travel with a copy of your passport and credit cards.  This way, if you should find that they have been stolen at any point, you still are in possession of the copies and the information that you will need to replace them.  Always lock your valuables in the safe in your room, or carry them on your person in fanny packs and other bags that can be kept close to your body.  And most importantly, never travel alone, especially at night.

If you have planned and researched all the safety and health tips about your location and activities, then you are all set to have a fantastic time on your family safari.  You can rest assured that you have done your family a great service by putting the time into this important aspect of your trip, but now you are ready to have fun!  To plan an African safaris.
