Gynecology is the field of medicine that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system. Gynecologists play a very important role in the world of medicine. Not only are they responsible for providing treatment and care to women, but they are also responsible for providing care to the child in the mother’s womb. The organs that form the reproductive system in a woman’s body include the ovaries, the breasts, the uterus and the vagina. Simply put, gynecologists study “the science of women.”

There are many issues relating to the female reproductive system that can’t be resolved by a general practitioner. In certain countries, women are first required to visit their general practitioner and state their problem before being able to see a gynecologist. The gynecologist often studies the reports from the general practitioner before coming to a decision. However, gynecologists in the United States can also provide primary care to their patients. Due to this, many women generally prefer to see gynecological surgeons for problems that aren’t directly related to their reproductive systems. Gynecology is an extremely extensive field. Some of the problems that gynecologists treat on a regular basis include:

  • Prolapse of the vagina
  • Menorrhagia
  • Amenorrhea
  • Urinal incontinence
  • Infertility
  • Vaginal infections
  • Other infections
  • Dysmenorrhea

Irregular menstrual periods are a problem for many women. There are a number of causes for this. When you visit a gynecologist, the first thing that he or she will do is carry out a diagnosis. This includes talking to the patient in order to figure out the issue and determine the cause of the problem.

Infertility

Infertility is a more common problem than many women realize. However, many studies have shown that a very high percentage of fertility problems can be fixed with simple treatments. According to several studies, around 40% to 50% of cases of infertility in couples are based in the woman. There are many risk factors that can cause infertility, and gynecologists are responsible for studying them in detail and then administering the right form of treatment depending upon the patient. In some cases, the gynecologist might even prescribe certain medicines that can be taken in order to increase a woman’s fertility. Only a very small percentage of women are incapable of conceiving even after treatment. This figure was much higher in the past, but advancements in medical practices have made it easy for more and more women to conceive.

Antenatal Care

The period after the delivery of the baby is a very challenging time for new parents. Gynecologists provide antenatal care to patients who had problems during pregnancy. Most patients are required to register with a certain clinic or gynecologist in order to get antenatal care.
