Looking for a General Contractor? 4 Ways to Get You Started

If you’ve ever had to deal with a contractor eyeing your electronics with more than casual interest or even a lascivious gleam, then you know: it’s not always easy to find a reliable general contractor to help you out. But don’t let that deter you. If you’re determined to get your home remodeling project underway, here are some tips on how to find and hire a qualified contractor.

Get a ton of recommendations

The more, the merrier. A range of options can help you figure out which choice works the best for you. Cull through those recommendations until you have a number of options to check out.

Do interviews

Phone interviews work but if you and the contractor both can do video calls, that would be great as well and give you more material on your hands. It’s easier to get a gauge on the person, especially when you’re talking to each other for the first time, with a video call.

Confirm and verify

Don’t just take the contractor’s word for it when he says he’s worked on a particular project and have so-and-so experience. Look at the facts, says This Old House. Verify them. Another way to do this is to ask for references and then to call those references up so you can check whether the contractor was being honest or not. If the contractor can’t produce those references, that’s a definite red flag.

Meet face to face

Once you do find the right general contractor, make sure you meet them face to face before hiring them. If that meeting goes well, then pat yourself on the back. It’s time to get your home improvement project started!

So while looking for a contractor might not be easy at the start, putting in a little time and effort—like this—often pay offs in the end.
